It's a universal known fact that there's a strong connection between looking your best and feeling your best. Unsurprisingly, many of the things that contribute to beauty issues (i.e. acne, premature wrinkling and hair loss) exacerbate mental health conditions including anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Ahead, three ways you may be undermining your mental and physical health.

Sleep Sabotage:

Most adults need roughly 7-8 hours of sleep, yet studies show that one in three Americans fail to get enough. Sleep deprivation not only contributes to blemishes, dry skin and premature wrinkles, but chronic sleep deprivation may trigger symptoms of depression...one of the top mental health disorders in the world.

Pro tip: Mobile phones and computers emit blue light, which in turn, suppresses melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. To support regular sleep, try shutting your devices down at least an hour before shut-eye.

Stressed Out:

When we're stressed, the body produces cortisol, a hormone that causes widespread inflammation, which contributes to the breakdown of collagen and leads to acne, rosacea and wrinkles. Over time, chronic stress can increase the risk of developing depression and anxiety.

Pro tip: Get moving! Exercise releases feel-good chemicals (think endorphins and serotonin) that help boost moods. In time, consistent exercise can reduce stress as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety. Movement also boosts energy and helps regulate sleep cycles, which can both be negatively affected by mental health disorders.

In the Gut:

Research proves that our gut microbiome powerfully impacts our overall well-being. In addition to playing a role in acne, eczema, rashes and inflammation, poor gut health has been linked to anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.

Pro tip: Opt to consume gut-friendly foods rich in pre and probiotics to support gut health while feeding digestive enzymes (i.e. yogurt/kefir, tempeh, kombucha, saurkraut, kimchi).
