Organic materials + Time + Heat
That's basically it! To get started (or keep going), you'll need a bin or bed, some patience and a 50/50 mix of greens and browns.
For Browns:
+ leaves
+ hay
+ sawdust
+ cardboard
+ natural fibers (i.e. cotton, linen or wool)
Browns add bulk, help with air flow and provide substance for the microorganisms that live in the green to consume.
Think: Carbon rich or carbohydrates
For Greens:
+ grass cuttings
+ eggshells
+ vegetable peelings
+ mostly green things
Greens helps compost heat up, which in turn, helps everything decompose!
Think: Nitrogen rich materials
"But can I compost it?" Yes, you can!
Loose Leaf Tea = The loose leaf tea is green but the bag is Brown
Tofu left in the fridge for a tad bit too long = Definite Green...go for it!
Moldy cheese = Dairy and other high fat foods take longer to heat up but technically Green.
Nail clippings = Believe it or not, these are Browns.
Pet hair (and your hair too) = Brown!
Old bills or letters = As long as you shred it and remove the plastic, Brown.
